Seasickness - what really helps

I myself also get seasick in heavy seas, so I know how bad it is :/ That's why I want to give some tips in this article, so you can get your seasickness under control and enjoy your holidays.

How does seasickness occur


When our underground moves, our body receives the signal - movement. The muscles or the organ of equilibrium in the inner ear are thus given the task of compensating for this movement. But if we stand below deck, for example, we cannot perceive any visual movement. This causes a processing conflict in the brain. Due to the opposing sensory impressions, our brain sends out more of the substance histamine - we get seasick.

Preventing seasickness


  1. Take over the steering wheel One of the best tips for me against seasickness is to take the steering wheel. As soon as you feel a bit uncomfortable, ask your skipper if you can steer for a while. If you have little experience, the skipper will be happy to stand beside you and make sure nothing happens. At the wheel you can concentrate on your journey and your destination and just like driving a car, you are in control and your discomfort will quickly improve.
  1. Look at the horizon, the land Find a point to look at, the best place is of course the mainland. If you are on the open sea, you have to be content with the horizon. Your brain can then perceive the movement better.
  1. No caffeine Caffeine increases the histamine level and thus increases your seasickness. Personally, I still can't do without coffee :)
  1. No alcohol Just like caffeine, alcohol increases histamine levels. Alcohol also drains fluid from your body. All of this promotes seasickness. You can of course have a small beer with your crew in the evening, but more is not recommended.
  1. The right diet You should also pay attention to your diet. Less fatty foods, more fresh stuff. For example, freshly caught fish, fresh meat, rice, corn, fresh fruit, cream cheese, mainly fresh :) You also shouldn’t eat too much or too little. Just so that you feel comfortable.
  1. Travel pills Travel pills are very helpful for many people if you take them at least 30 minutes before. Here are my favorites. Ratiopharm travel tablets > Pharmacy Laboratories-Amarin Travel Tablets Read the package insert or ask a doctor or pharmacist for more detailed information.
  1. Sufficient sleep It is also very important that you get enough sleep. If you are resting, you can quickly and easily block out nauseating visual stimuli and at the same time wait until the swell has calmed down.
  1. Fresh air Fresh air is better than the stale air in your bunk. Stay on deck and take a deep breath. Combine this with the other tips.
  1. Lie flat on your back with your eyes closed By lying flat on your back with your eyes closed, you switch off the optical sense organ. Often you can then sleep for a while and after that, you already feel better.
  1. Do not lean over the railing At last, I would like to give you the advice never to lean over the railing when you have to throw up. It's better for everyone involved to have the bucket beside you or throw up in the cockpit instead of having to fish yourself out of the water. It is no problem to clean the cockpit, but it is a very big problem when you go overboard.

And don't worry, in the worst case the body gets used to all the swaying on board after three days. If you go ashore again, you will become land-sick :D
